General Motors reported a decline in third-quarter sales, as discontinued models and a diminished market for electric vehicles weighed on the company's performance.

The automaker's third-quarter sales came in just shy of 671,000, down 5.5% year-over-year.

The company said despite the decline, GM's highest volume vehicles sold at levels in-line with the same period a year ago. GM also touted strong performance in both full-size and small SUVs and full-size pickups.

"Our business is performing very well, the launch of our next-generation full-size pickup trucks is on track, and we are making investments in new vehicles, innovative technologies, and our U.S. manufacturing footprint to drive our next phase of growth," GM North America President Duncan Aldred said.
