Stocks were lower midday Thursday, though they were off session lows. Here's what's moving markets today:

-- Volatile bond yields: Long-term U.S. Treasury yields rose after fresh economic data signaled that the economy is on solid footing, then retretated midday. Two-year yields, sensitive to the Federal Reserve's next rate moves, were down the most.

-- Oil prices up: Brent crude futures, the international benchmark for oil, rose 3.6% to $101.60 midday Thursday, adding to fears of a prolonged bout of inflation. U.S. oil rose 2.6% to $92.80.

-- Jobs report on deck: Investors will get a better read on the economy Friday morning, when September job figures are set for release.
