From September 27 to October 6, the Yangpu sub-venue of the Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival will bring together the century-old twin smokestacks light show, the Wujiaochang commercial district, and the University Road market. From dusk to late night, a one-of-a-kind lineup of highlights will unfold one after another.
From a cup of coffee to a dinner, from a stunning main show to a lively pedestrian street, everything beautiful about an autumn night will be cast into the same brilliant nightscape.
16:00 A Cup of Coffee, Opening Yangpu's Night Coordinates in the Riverside Breeze
Location: "One Foot Apart" Cafe, Yangshupu Power Plant Ruins Park
Atmosphere: riverside breeze, industrial remains in view, a slow-paced start
The afternoon is the best time of day to slow down. Step into the riverside "One Foot Apart" cafe, order a special drink, let your eyes rest on the century-old red-brick steel frames beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, and let your rhythm follow the not-yet-darkened sky over the river.
This year's Light and Shadow Festival is not only something to see, but also something to "drink" and "carry" with you. Under Tianluoxing, the top IP "Teddy Family" has partnered with "One Foot Apart" to create custom light-and-shadow co-branded coffee cup accessories. While taking a break, hold a cup of limited-edition warmth and take the romance of light and shadow into your palm ahead of time.
17:00 The Soft Light of Five O'Clock Perfectly Illuminates the Industrial Skeleton
Location: Yangshupu Power Plant Ruins Park
Atmosphere: blue-hour prelude, hardcore industrial texture, the best sunset light and shadow
Around five o'clock, the setting sun slants across the scene, and the light is soft and long, making it the golden hour to closely appreciate the texture of the industrial remains. As what was once the "Far East's No. 1 Power Plant," the century-old twin smokestacks and ash silos have been well preserved, achieving a warm transformation from an "industrial rust belt" to a "life showcase belt." In this hour before the lights come on, stroll through the park, and these details are most worth gazing at quietly.
Century-old twin smokestacks: the iconic hundred-meter twin towers piercing the sky, the park's most recognizable symbol and the core carrier of tonight's main show; Ash Silo Art Space: the cylindrical industrial ash silo structure is both a contemporary art space and a natural screen for the later surge of light and shadow; Riverside tower crane: the bright orange industrial crane arm outlines a magnificent industrial skyline silhouette under the afterglow of the setting sun; Aerial viewing walkway: climb the steps and look down at ships shuttling along the Huangpu River, feeling the contrasting tension between rusty steel frames and flowing river water; Riverside waterfront lawn: greenery grows from the cracks in the concrete, hiding the unique breath of the city's riverside.
18:00 At Six O'Clock Sharp, the Century-Old Twin Smokestacks Are Fully "Activated" by Light and Shadow
Location: Main venue, Yangshupu Power Plant Ruins Park
Lighting hours: September 28 - October 6, 18:00 - 22:00 (first show at 18:00, last show at 22:00)
Performance frequency: every night on the hour and half hour, each show about 5 minutes
The entire show uses the official image ambassador "Xiao Lingguang" as its visual thread, following the old industrial memories of the water plant, soap factory, and power plant to connect the urban development of Wujiaochang with the cultural heritage of century-old universities. Digital innovation forces gather here, and the century-old twin smokestacks transform into a giant energy pool, where robotic arms and manufacturing towers jointly forge a shining "Maker Star." The light of maker particles crosses a century, light and shadow pass through a time-space vortex, unfolding an boundless new digital world, and finally settling on the main visual theme "Yang 'Shu' Pu, One-of-a-Kind YOUNG." It is recommended to arrive 10 minutes before each show starts, use a wide-angle low camera angle, and shoot upward to capture both the industrial trusses and the flowing skyline of the twin smokestacks in the frame.
As the main show lights up, the entire park simultaneously switches to a dreamlike night scene, and six major art installations bloom together at this moment. Multi-layered streamlined light gates, with industrial pipe textures fused with river tide ripples, outline a cyberpunk entrance ceremony in pink, purple, and deep blue. Laser tassels weave a suspended canopy, and blue-green light bands sway with the evening breeze, like a "frozen river tide" strolling overhead. Stone blocks in the old factory area become a glowing chessboard, with the Teddy Family turned into chess pieces scattered by the riverside, each step a breakthrough exploration of time. At the foot of the old ash silo, the reed marsh is lit by lasers and mist, with waves of light surging to create a breathing green field. With the century-old smokestacks as the backdrop, Xiao Lingguang and the Teddy Family sit side by side within a geometric camera frame, the C-position for group photos. Targeted beams pierce through the shadows of the trees, with misty fog creating a dreamlike forest corridor.
