China's First Deepwater Oilfield Liuhua Achieves New Breakthrough as Major National Equipment Operates in Coordination

During this National Day holiday, China's deepwater oilfield production reached a new breakthrough. Today, the Liuhua Oilfield, China's first deepwater oilfield, saw its secondary development project's cumulative crude oil production surpass 2 million tons. To date, the oilfield has produced over 40 million tons of crude oil, with daily output hitting a record high since it began production 22 years ago, providing solid support for national energy security.

Major national equipment "Haiji-2" and "Hai Kui-1" operate in coordination. The Liuhua Oilfield secondary development project is located in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, with an average water depth of 305 meters, relying on Asia's first deepwater jacket platform "Haiji-2," Asia's first cylindrical floating production, storage, and offloading facility "Hai Kui-1," and subsea production systems operating in coordination. How do these two offshore facilities of different forms—both major national equipment—operate safely and efficiently in coordination? The Liuhua Oilfield has delivered a "Chinese solution" for the operation and maintenance of large deepwater facilities. "Hai Kui-1" and "Haiji-2" are arranged in sequence, each handling production processing, oil storage and export, and drilling and oil extraction. Relying on an integrated sea-land intelligent central control system, they bring on-site operations more than 240 kilometers away under unified monitoring at the Shenzhen onshore production control center. Shu Zhengyong, Director of CNOOC Liuhua Oilfield "Haiji-2": In response to the frequent typhoons in the South China Sea and frequent internal wave currents in summer, the team equipped both facilities with "typhoon mode production" capabilities, relying on remote control to maintain stable production. This intelligent management model has been applied 11 times, recovering over 50,000 tons of lost production and generating economic benefits exceeding 170 million yuan. Facility health maintenance is also fully digitalized. The "Haiji-2" jacket integrates a digital twin system, a marine environment monitoring system, and a seabed environment monitoring system, sensing structural stress and seabed changes in real time, achieving the transformation of large deepwater facilities from "human defense" to "intelligent defense." Xue Ting, FPSO offloading supervisor at CNOOC Liuhua Oilfield "Hai Kui-1": In response to the frequent internal wave currents in the area, "Hai Kui-1" is equipped with a dedicated internal wave current monitoring system, as well as radar monitoring, guard ship patrols, and other multi-dimensional means, monitoring mooring tension and oil tanker position status in real time, achieving early risk prediction and rapid hazard resolution, with the annual offloading operation window utilization rate reaching over 90%.

The deep-sea energy transportation system ensures efficient crude oil export. Developing deepwater oilfields requires both the ability to safely extract crude oil and the capability to transport it efficiently. CNOOC is accelerating the construction of an independently controllable deep-sea energy transportation system, gradually opening up an independent deepwater oil and gas export chain to provide solid support for national energy security. The Liuhua Oilfield is China's first deepwater oilfield. The "Hai Kui-1," Asia's first cylindrical floating production, storage, and offloading unit serving here, lacks the weathervane effect of conventional ship-type FPSOs, has limited attitude adjustment space, and faces enormous challenges in crude oil export. Chen Jingming, Captain of the "Bei Hai Kai Tuo" vessel of CNOOC International Trade Beihai Shipping Company: Building new specialized vessels takes a long time with high investment costs. We carried out targeted modifications to the existing tanker "Bei Hai Kai Tuo," installing a bow loading system on a conventional tanker for the first time in China, completing dock construction in just 12 days and completing test delivery one month ahead of schedule. The modified "Bei Hai Kai Tuo" can transport a maximum of 450,000 barrels of crude oil per single voyage. To date, it has completed 52 offloading operations, transporting over 2 million tons of crude oil. While adapting vessel hardware, CNOOC has built an intelligent oil and gas export operation platform, providing digital and intelligent support for determining offloading timing, optimizing berthing plans, coordinating offloading resource allocation, and responding to special weather and sea conditions. Yang Shuangwei, Deputy General Manager of CNOOC Development Sales Service Company: The intelligent operation platform uses AI and big data technology to intelligently match more than 100 offloading vessels. It currently covers 20 offloading terminals, sending over 1,600 vessel dispatch orders annually, providing strong support for the safe and efficient offloading of offshore crude oil.
