Kobo eReader 6.0 Beta Firmware Hit by Serious Bug: Book Data Won't Display, Official Warns Against Manual Downgrade

According to a report from foreign media outlet NotebookCheck, eReader manufacturer Kobo recently released a 6.0 beta software update that has caused serious problems. Some eReader users discovered after updating that their books, annotations, reading statistics and other data could not display properly, accompanied by sluggish device performance and sync abnormalities.

Kobo has confirmed the bug. The affected software versions include 5.18.270971 and 6.0.274403, covering three eReader models: Libra Colour, Clara BW, and Clara Colour. The engineering team has identified the root cause and is currently developing a fix.

Based on user feedback, the issue goes beyond books or reading data temporarily failing to display. One Clara BW user reported that after installing the beta, the device interface became noticeably laggy, frequently showing a "loading" prompt, and the previously logged-in Libby account was also lost. Other users reported abnormalities with sideloaded eBooks, book collections, and Libby sync functionality, suggesting the update may affect multiple software features.

In its official statement, Kobo emphasized that the books, annotations, and reading statistics that currently cannot display have not actually been deleted. The company plans to automatically restore this content through a subsequent software update, and users do not need to manually re-import anything.

However, Kobo specifically warned affected users not to attempt rolling back or reinstalling older firmware. The company stated that doing so could permanently delete data that is currently unable to display. Users should avoid downgrading the firmware on their own to prevent further data loss.

The company has not yet announced a specific timeline for the fix, and affected users will need to wait for some time.
